Program of the decade?

Postby JPK77 » Thu Jan 14, 2010 4:47 pm

No, we don't want to get into the tired circular "A had a better decade because it was better in critiera X" vs "No, B did because it had a better criteria Y" argument, 'cause that only leads to flame wars and hurt feelings.

Instead, we're going to leave teams out of it altogether, and ask the experts on this board (meaning everybody) to provide their opinions on the weights for each of 10 criteria. Once we've got a consensus set of weights, we'll let my laptop compare each team's decade to every other team's decade by those criteria, assign the weights, and give us a list of results.

In the form (see link below) you can assign any number from 0 to 999 to each of the criteria. The easiest way to do this is to pick the one you think is most important, give it a relatively high number, then give your 2nd most important a lower number by some percentage (i.e. if you think the most important is twice as important as your second, use something like 999 for the 1st and 500 for the second.)

Zero is allowed, to indicate you don't think that criterion even matters for this discussion.

I'll automatically adjust all inputs so that each input sums to 10000, then take the average value over all inputs for each criterion.

The form is at http://football.kislanko.com/criteria_FCS.html

Well, that would be true if we were talking about the "201st decade" like we talk about "the 20th Century", but a decade is any 10-year interval, so we're talking about 2000-2009, not 1999-2008 or 2001-2010.

Anyway, I've had a few opinions expressed, and so far our priorities are:

WinPct 1783
NCWins 1692
NBCSWins 1258
NCGames 1056
NBCSBowls 986
NumUndefeated 872
NumWinSeasons 786
Num10Wins 605
NumBowlWins 499
NumBowlGames 463

This is interesting, looks good. I just submitted information for the Texas Longhorns, :eek1 can't imagine they would be #1 for the decade. But this will be interesting and it should provide good conversation on those long cold winter nights, like the ones we have here in Central Texas. :run

Sorry, I went ahead and just answered it, then went back and read your post. I don't know, maybe BCS bowl game wins? Thanks again,

Texas had one of the best decades by any criterion.

Those Central Texas winter nights don't hold a candle to these North Colorado winter nights. Oh, wait, can you spare a candle :P ?

Hands down USC. Two MNC's and lost playing for a third. Carrol's second year until last year were just filthy! UF would be right up there if not for the Zook Years. They were a game away from playing for it in '01 and '09 and won it all in '06 and '08. Texas gets the nod as most consistent. OU could have been had they not sucked in BcS Games.

With criteria weights:
WinPct 1784
NBCSWins 1183
NCWins 1182
NumWinSeasons 1058
NCGames 894
NBCSBowls 834
NumBowlWins 825
NumUndefeated 788
NumBowlGames 784
Num10Wins 667

our program with the best decade by total points is Ohio State. In the pairwise comparison, though, both Oklahoma and Texas had better decades than the Buckeyes, and Texas had a better decade than Oklahoma.

Pretty cool stuff - thanks JPK

I also like how the non-BCS teams fared - they have held up pretty well for an extended period of time now

Pretty cool, thanks! 8) We have this here on our website but of course the "experts" at ESPN :run :eek1 :run or Fox don't have this. Looks like we're one step ahead again, and of course our polls and Heisman votes rule also!
