Pachinko is a Japanese gambling machine that seems the bizarre offspring of an evil scientist's union of a 50's pinball machine and Vegas-style one-armed bandit. These wall-mounted moneymakers sling a varying number of nearly identical small steel balls through a circular maze of pins and holes, causing them to bounce wildly before (mostly) disappearing, right along with a player's money. A precious few bounce into magic places that tease the promise of later, greater fortune, while most simply bounce into oblivion. The final bouncing destiny of any one ball is anyone's guess.
